Parosteal Bone Tumors(Analysis of 20 Cases During Past 16 years)




Abstract
Of 521 bone tumors diagnosed and treated and treated at Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital form Jan. 1975 to Dec. 1990, twenty cases of parosteal bone tumors were reviewed and analyzed with respect to the types
of
the
tumors, the age and sex distributions, the locations of the lesion, clinicopathological findings , the treatment and the clinical results.
Parosteal osteosarcoma was the most common (14 cases, 70%), followed by periosteal chondrosarcoma (3 cases, 15%), periosteal chondroma (1 cases, 10%), and periosteal osteosarcoma (1 cases, 5%). Third decade was the most common age (8 cases, 40%)
and the
distal femur was the most common site of parosteal bone tumors. Of 18 malignant tumors, four patients were treated by amputation, six patients by wide excision only four patients by wide excision followed by tumor prosthesis, two patients by
biopsy
only, one patient by wide excision and resection arthrodesis, one patient by wide excision and replacement with the autoclaved resected bone, Two patients with benign tumors were treated by intralesional curettage. There were one local recurrence
and
one lung metastasis among 11 cases of parosteal osteosarcoma that were followed up for more than 2 years, and lung metastasis was found in one case of periosteal osteosarcoma.
